GPS Camera

Inspired by the route maps that many of us keep after a journey marked with places that we visited along the way, GPS Camera aims to develop this practice, taking it to the to the scale of the dots on the map – a city wide scale.

This camera is configured for specific destinations, and comes with a map of the destination city, a tangible mnemonic with which you can chart your progress. Upon arrival, you are allowed to take one photograph in each grid square on the map. Once a photo is taken the camera shuts down until you move on to a new section of the map. This playful approach to travel photography encourages you to explore the city as a whole rather than repeatedly photographing the same thing over and over again. The camera becomes the tour guide.

Later, the photos are transferred onto a digital map of the city according to their corresponding grid references to make a memory map, and highlight the areas of the city which were seen and those which remained unexplored. This map then becomes a part of a larger scale route-map to give a more complete spacial and memorial digital record of the journey.

About

My name is Mark and I’m a product interaction designer. Or something.

I am currently a PhD candidate in the Horizon Digital Economy Research Hub at the University of Nottingham. As well as conducting my own research into the design of more emotionally valuable and temporally enduring technologies, I continue to be involved in ongoing research projects exploring the possibilities of  ’Technology Heirlooms’.

Anyway, feel free to have a look around and if  you think you might be interested in working with me get in touch.
